What Causes Severe Vaginal Bleeding After Having I-pill?

Hello, I am a 23 years old girl, about to be 24 years old on 16th dec. I took an Ipill last week on Wednesday within 12hrs of intercourse. Since yesterday I am having heavy vaginal bleeding like I ve never had in my regular periods. My last period ended on 20 nov which means that I am having periods just 10 days later. I am really worried because the flow is much stronger than I ve ever experienced before. I am feeling very weak. Can you please tell me what s happening ?

Hi,

You have taken I-pill within the stipulated time; hence you are protected from the pregnancy from the said intercourse. I-pill is an emergency post coital contraceptive pill. These sort of pills have following after effects:

1. The following menses may get delayed by few days to a week or so.

2. Few days after the consumption of pills, some amount of bleeding does occur; however such bleeding is of very mild type and stops within a couple of days. If you are experiencing such a heavy bleeding, you should not ignore it. It is most likely to be due to gross hormonal variation.

However, before arriving at such conclusion, any pregnancy related or tumor related cause should be excluded. Please report to your Gynaecologist ASAP. If it is not an Obstetric cause, please undergo ultrasonography to look for any tumour in the uterus or any polyp in the uterine cavity. Such conditions will need surgical treatment. The bleeding can be controlled with some progesterone preparation like Deviry. However, the underlying cause must be sought for and treated to prevent further complications and recurrence of such incidences.

I hope this gives you the required message. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nishikant Shrotri
