What Causes Severe Vomiting And Diarrhea?

Hello, my sister who is 20 years old had right LQ abdomen pain 4 days ago. We had taken her to a urgent care, there they did a CT scan and found a 1.6cm ovarian cyst that had ruptured. She was treated and sent home with hydrocodoine. Now tonight I get a call from her at 2:45 am and she is now vomitting and has diarrhea no stop since midnight. Could these be related or could she now have the flu or food poisoning?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

It could be gastroenteritis. It is important that she stays hydrated. If she has a fever or blood in her stools, she should go to the hospital. If not, she could try Imodium/loperamide or some such and an antiemetic, e.g. ondansetron.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anders Mark Christensen,

General Surgeon Dr. T Chandrakant's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history and understood the concerns.
Ruptured ovarian cyst can cause irritation of the bowel and peritoneum causing vomiting and loose stools hence needs urgent admission, investigations of blood, stool and urine; revision ultrasound to see for any developments and also to decide about the need for exploratory laparotomy.

If the ultrasound is normal then the cause can be gastroenteritis and thus treated with intravenous fluids, antibiotics and supportive treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant,
General Surgeon
