Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Shaking And Wobbly Movement In An Aged Diabetic?
My dad is 92. He is becoming more immobile as time goes on of course. Some times he has what could be described as the shakes or wobbly legs . He may go three of four days without it and then have it a little or he may have a major case of it where he cannot even stand and hold himself upright. He has cancer but is doing well with it, he has a heart condition, he has had a stroke 20 years ago and has been told he has type 2 diabetes but is on no medication for it. None of his doctors address the shakes. One suggested its just old age. Since it comes and goes I wonder if something triggers it such as not enough water or too much sugar. Any thoughts.
Hi, Thanks for asking. Based on your query, my opinion is as follows. 1. Shaking or wobbly legs could be due to loss of balance, muscle weakness, and fear of fall. 2. Diabetes could be causing peripheral neuropathy, leading to numbness and loss of sensation and hence, loss of balance. 3. He will require walking stick for support. Also caretaker to help him around will be helpful. 4. Passive and active muscle exercises to strengthen muscles along with Vit B-complex supplements with Alpha-lipoic acid supplements will be helpful. Avoid falling, as at this age, any fall will be life threatening with so many associated factors. Improve hydration. Sugar should be limited, due to his diabetic condition. Hope it helps. Any further queries, happy to help again.
