What Causes Sharp And Constant Pain In My Ear After Piercing It?

I have an industrial piercing of almost two years. the other day i left my bar out all day and had to push an earring through the top hole. it hurt on the top of the ear but nothing unusual. about 2 days later i got this sharp constant pain behind my ear. it hurts to touch it or pull my ear forward or anything. its red and throbbing a little bit.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your query you have symptoms of sharp and constant pain in my ear after piercing which is mainly because of infection which occur during piercing due to which wound does not heal properly and pain occurs. It could be due to improperly sterilized instruments. Well this is very common problem during piercing, need not to panic about it. Healing can take 2-4 weeks. If symptoms keeps on persisting visit ENT specialist once and get it examined. Take proper course of antibiotics. Apply antiseptic lotion as well locally. If there is delayed healing due to irritation of ring, remove the rings for few days and re apply after healing. Maintain hygiene of that area. Keep wound clean with Betadine.
