What Causes Sharp Pain In Lower Abdomen While Being On Mirena?
Hi, this is my second time using mirena and we have 2 kids. It s been about 1.5 years since I stopped bleeding for the insertion. All of a sudden 4 days ago I had sharp pain which came in waves in what I believe are my ovaries. The day after I had a bunch of brown discharge. The pain and discharge subsisted for a few days so I didn t think Anything of it. 2 days ago the pain came back in waves like before and so did the discharge..... Do u need to make an appointment with my ob/GYN? What could this be from? Could I have miscarried?

The way the pain is occurring in bouts accompanied by altered discharge suggests that you could perhaps be having uterine cramps and any old collected discharge is being let out. Fresh bleeding is observed in case of a miscarriage while altered color is seen in a missed abortion. Apart from these, it is also possible for some breakthrough bleeding to happen. Clarification of the situation can be had from a clinical evaluation, a trans-vaginal sonogram and a blood test for pregnancy if needed. Hope this helps.

In my opinion a miscarriage is unlikely and your presentation is probably associated with a hormonal imbalance that can be caused by the mirena itself, or this could simply be side effects of the mirena. Common side effects include inter-menstrual bleeding, menstrual irregularities, etc.
Although, I would also like to add that there are some other factors that could be in play here like medications, stress, birth control, sudden weight gain, or weight loss, etc. These can also influence female hormone levels and result in such a presentation. I would also recommend a visit to your doctor for a physical examination including an ultrasound of your abdomen and pelvis.
