I have had intermittent sharp pain in my right ear for about 10 days now, some days it happens more than others. I saw my GP who gave me a course of antibiotics which seemed to help but has now recommenced. I am also profoundly deaf if this ear. What is the cause? What do you suggest I do? Wendy

Though Pain in ear some times felt due to diseases of other organs also, and on examination ear is found to be normal and this particular situation is called as referred otalgia (pain in ear). But in your case you are having profound deafness in the same ear so it appears this pain is due to disease of ear itself. The possibilities are-
I will suggest you to please consult your ENT doctor for thorough examination to find out the reasion for acute pain and deafness so that treatment may be plan.

What Causes Sharp Pain In Right Ear?
Hello Welcome in H.C.M. I have gone through tour query regarding pain in your right ear, though you are having profound deafness in the same ear. Though Pain in ear some times felt due to diseases of other organs also, and on examination ear is found to be normal and this particular situation is called as referred otalgia (pain in ear). But in your case you are having profound deafness in the same ear so it appears this pain is due to disease of ear itself. The possibilities are- 1- Otitis Externa (may be bacterial or fungal infection of ext ear canal). 2- Acuteotitis media. 3- Acute mastioditis. 4- Acute exacervation over cholesteatoma of ear. 5- Eustachian tube dysfunction. I will suggest you to please consult your ENT doctor for thorough examination to find out the reasion for acute pain and deafness so that treatment may be plan. Regards.
