What Causes Shortness Of Breath After A Quadruple Bypass Surgery?
My 75 year father is one week and 4 days post op quadruple bypass surgery. My siblings and I flew in to see him (We all live in different states) prior to his surgery and were able to stay with him a few days after surgery. Our step mother is now at their home taking care of him... our problem is is she says he doesn't want to talk to anyone on the phone due to being short of breath... she won't even put the phone to his ear so we can tell him we love him or that we are thinking of him. We are frustrated because she has no home health nurse coming in to keep an eye on him and his breathing she is doing everything all her own. We are afraid she might be missing signs that he is not doing as well as she states. My question is is it normal to have problems talking after bypass surgery due to shortness of breath. She also said he was having soreness on the leg that had the vein removed for the bypass...
Since your father is quite elderly and had a major bypass surgery, mild breathlessness can be there post surgery due to age related cardiac weakness and damage due to coronary artery disease, also reduce pumping of heart.
I would advise you to ask nurse to keep an eye on his breath and if the intensity increases, immediately take him to hospital.
Also, soreness in legs at the site of vein removal will be there till its completely healed. Healing is a slow process in elderly age patient.
But, keep an eye that it shouldn't get infected or there is redness, tenderness or warmth feeling.
Thanks
