What Causes Shortness Of Breath After Physical Exertion?
Hi, under exertion, running stairs, bicycling up a steep grade etc I experience shortness of breath to a point like hyperventilating. This will last for several minutes after I stop what I’m doing. I am over weight and carry quite a bit of weight in my chest. I’m a male 58 years old I have strength trained and lifted weights basically since high school. I used to suffer from lung congestion while taking high blood pressure medication. I started taking singular and don’t have the lung congestion but know deal with this problem. I’m currently working hard at cardio exercise to reduce my weight Please what are your thoughts on this issue
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Since you are overweight and having hypertension, we should definitely rule out heart diseases for your breathlessness on exertion. So get done blood pressure monitoring, ECG, 2D echo and stress test. If all these are normal then no need to worry for heart diseases. We should also rule out bronchitis because of lung congestion. So get done PFT (Pulmonary Function Test). PFT will not only diagnose bronchitis but it will also tell you about severity of the disease and treatment is based on severity only. You may need long acting inhaled bronchodilators (formoterol or salmeterol).Don't worry, you will be alright with all these. First diagnose and then start appropriate treatment. Continue weight reduction efforts.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
