What Causes Shortness Of Breath And Chest Pain?

My husband is 53 and has been having shortness of breath and some chest pain and pounding heart beat with little exertion. He has had an echo stress test, ekg and a VP scan of his lungs, all were normal and was told he had a low probability of a PE. What else should he have checked out?

Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your husband's situation and problem.
Since his extensive cardiac work up is normal, no need to worry for cardiac diseases.
His VP (ventilation perfusion) scan is also normal, so Pulmonary embolism is less likely.
In my opinion, we should rule out bronchitis in his case.
Bronchitis can cause breathlessness and chest pain.
So better to consult pulmonologist and get done PFT (Pulmonary Function Test).
PFT is needed for the diagnosis of bronchitis.
It will also tell you about severity of the disease and treatment of bronchitis is based on severity only. He may need inhaled bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS). So get done PFT.
Hope I have solved your query. Wishing good health to your husband. Thanks.
