I have many cuts on my fingers that have not healed in many months. I do have psoriatic arthritis and can not take any injectables( such as humira etc... these cuts have been hampering my ability to use my hands. every finger is affected. can you help me to understand maybe what I have ?
The finger cuts are basically due to extremely dry skin of hands. The fact that you have psoriatic arthritis is important here because these finger cracks could be one manifestation of psoriatic involvement of palms/ hands. If I was the treating doctor I would suggest you to use an intensive moisturizer cream e.g one which contains urea, lactic acid, salicylic acid etc would be useful. These ingredients are hygroscopic i.e retain moisture as well as exfoliate scaly skin. Apply frequently and every time after washing hands. In addition I would also suggest you to apply a potent topical steroid cream e.g clobetasol propionate 0.05% cream Or halobetasol propionate 0.05%, twice daily, specifically over sites of skin cracks/ fissures. Steroids are antiinflammatory and would help heal the fissures/ cracks faster and thus reduce the discomfort. I suggest that you visit a dermatologist for the needful.
