What Causes Slurred Speech All Of A Sudden And Loss Of Motor Control?

Yesterday at dinner my 62 yr old nephew had the symptoms of a TIA (slurred speech, inability to answer questions intelligently, loss of motor control, lowered eyelids,) which lasted upwards of two hours. afterward he had no memory of this episode. We thought he was unexpectedly quite drunk, and didn t think of a TIA until we began to talk about it. He refused to seek medical attention. Should we insist that he seek medical attention within some critical time frame? According to his wife, this has happened at least once before--she was unclear how long ago. YYYY@YYYY

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, TIA could well be the case given your description. TIA is considered an emergency because it can be followed by a stroke in the future. So it is important to be evaluated for stroke risk factors and if needed intervene to prevent future strokes from happening. It is important to do it before and not once a stroke has happened. So he should seek medical attention possibly on this same day, you should insist and try to convince him.

I hope to have been of help.
