Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Malik's Response
Hello,
Dysarthria might be caused by nervous system disorders (stroke, brain mass lesions, trauma, vascular problems) or disorders of nerve conduction from nerves to muscles (myasthenia gravis) or disorders of speech muscles (muscle dystrophies or inflammatory conditions). The most common cause in the elderly is the nerve system disorders and she should first be evaluated by a neurologist.
The investigation should start with MRI to exclude brain stroke (most common cause) or any other mass lesions. Blood tests might help to examine inflammatory muscle problems. Nerve conduction studies and electromyography might also be ordered to study any problems of nerve conduction from nerves to muscles. All the mentioned tests may not be required and additional investigations might also be ordered by your doctor according to test results.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Malik
