Hello Lori!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would like to explain that there are different disorders related to slurred speech.

Speech is realized by a coordination of several systems: the muscles of the tongue and throat, the nerves and the brain which controls the commands to the muscles.

Every disorder affecting these systems can cause your symptoms.

The brain MRI has excluded possible brain lesions like a stroke or a tumor which can cause these symptoms.

I recommend you to consult with a neurologist for a careful physical examination and perform a routine blood test, blood electrolytes and thyroid hormone levels.

An Electromyography may be needed to exclude a possible motor neuron disease or neuro-muscular junction disorder.

Hope to have been helpful!

Greetings! Dr. Iliri
