What Causes Sore Throat And Spots On The Tonsils While Treating Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Hello Dr Rynne, I m experiencing a sore throat with spots on my tonsils, I went to the doctor today but not my regular doctor because their office is not doing cultures anymore. I went to a urgent care center. They took a culture and they think it s viral. My concern is I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, should I have more concern with this sore throat and discomfort in my stomach. Started with a headache last week and progressed to a sore throat, I m just feeling malice . I took myself off of my RA medication three days ago, when I started to feel a sore throat so that my body could fight whatever it is. Thank you for your time. MJ

Hello MJ,
The condition you have is Acute Viral Tonsillitis. It only requires supportive therapy for the treatment.

1. Betadine Gargles/ Warm water gargles
2. Plenty of fluid intake
3. Paracetamol twice a day for pain
4. Vitamin B Complex capsules

There is no need to stop your medications for RA. You'll be fine in 7-10 days.
