What Causes Sore Throat, runny Nose, cough And Difficult Breathing?

I started out with a sore throat and running nose last weekend, which progressed to a very chesty cough and difficulty breathing. There is some discomfort in my chest, but not pain as such. I saw my GP on thursday, who checked my peak flow, which was a poor 260. But my pulse and oxygen saturation was normal. I was told that I had a cold, but prescribed an asthma inhaler to help with my breathing. I have never had a cold like this before and it has been suggested to me by a family member that I may have some sort of parasite, what do you think? I am a 30 year old female and last travelled to sri lanka in August last year.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Sore throat and runny nose transforming into chesty cough and difficulty in breathing can be due to the following reasons:
- Upper respiratory tract infection and inflammation spreading to the lower respiratory tract causes as you have mentioned
- Viral cause can take a lot of time to settle
- Bacterial cause needs treatment with proper antibiotic
- In both causes you need a good anti-inflammatory and decongestant treatment
- Avoid all the instigating and enhancing factors that increase your symptoms
- Also, get investigations for X-ray chest and blood to see for any associated problems like diabetes
- Bronchodilator has already been given as inhaler, please continue
- Sometimes oral steroids may be needed for a short course

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
