What Causes Soreness In The Cheek After Putting A Watch Battery In The Mouth?

My son feel asleep with a watch battery in his mouth and it turned his cheek black, and made his cheek and tongne sore. He woke up and realized he still had it in, and he spit it out. His throat doesn't hurt, so I don't think any of the acid/alkaline went down his throat. I made him rinse his mouth out with Biotene mouth rinse. I just want to know if there is anything more I should do. He seems fine other than he says his cheek is sore.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Soreness in the cheek indicates mucosa damage via melting of the superficial layer of the battery through contact with saliva. Along with salted lukewarm water gargles, local application of chlorhexidine gluconate will help to recover faster.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
