What Causes Soreness In The Tongue While Using Carmex Lip Balm?

I’ve been using Carmex medicated lip balm for a few years now, several times a day. It got to the point that I felt soothed by it and was licking off my lips all the time. My tongue has been really sore for several months now, and I’m wondering if the camphor could have burned my tongue. In any event, what can I do to heal my tongue?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Carmex or any other lip balms can cause soreness of tongue, if used for longer duration. It is due to the continuous exposure to ingredients like camphor present in the lip balm. You can apply oral Triamcinolone ointments for symptomatic relief. Nothing much to worry as it will heal well with conservative treatment. Do not overuse lip balms as they can cause addiction and soreness.

Wishing you good health.

Thanks.
