What Causes Soreness Of Knee Around Knee Cap?

My knee is sore around my knee cap (both sides and the bottom, but its worst on the inside). It feels real squishy in some areas, definitely different than the other knee. It isnt visibly swollen, but it FEELS swollen, and the back of my knee hurts when I extend my leg, or press down with a lot of pressure on my heel. About 8-9 years ago, I had a synovial cyst removed from under my knee cap, and had a torn meniscus repaired, but this feels different. Im 32, former athlete, still in decent shape, but not nearly as active as i once was. Any ideas?

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
you have synovial effusion as per your explaination, go to an Ortho surgeon, get the synovial fluid aspirated, Inj. kenacort 40 mg intra- articular. and use knee cap 24x7 for three weeks don't bend your knees and use commode. knee cap can be removed for 3-5 min only while going to toilet or bathing. strict use of knee cap needed for 3 weeks, otherwise the fluid gets recollected.
