What Causes Splitting Of Nipples During Pregnancy?

One of my nipples split on the side about 5 months ago. It was no big deal but now it hurts and is starting to turn a purpl color. I am 5 months pregnant as well, I believe it happend when I got pregnant. Is this something I should be concerned with?
