What Causes Spotting After The First Day Of Sexual Intercourse?

Hello. I had sex a week ago. It was my first time. I had just finished with my period. My boyfriend used a condom but the next day I went to the drugstore to buy the morning after pill just to be safe. Today I noticed a little red (spotting). Why is this? I did notice I felt thinner two days later after having sex, I go to the gym occasionally and I've been a little stress due to my job. Can someone help me please?

Hello,

It is very usual to have spotting or bleeding after taking morning after pills.
Morning after pill works by either by preventing ovaries from releasing the egg or by altering the lining so that the egg remains embedded.
During this, you may experience bleeding at times other than her normal cycle as well. It is commonly known as breakthrough bleeding.
This usually occurs due to hormonal imbalance by taking morning after pills ( they are nothing but hormones).
If the bleeding continues for a long time, then you should consult a Gynecologist immediately.
If it stops in one or 2 days, then nothing to be concerned too much about this.

As you have stress, better try relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation.
My advice is to use the barrier methods like Condoms.
As frequent use of Morning after pill is usually not recommended.
You should use it only in avoidable situations.

Hope this helps.

Wishing you good health.

General Surgeon Dr. M Y Shareef's  Response
Hi ! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

If I were your doctor, I would advise you for a routine routine and pregnancy test, a serum HCG, and an ultrasound of pelvic organs if need be. Even though morning after pill does prevent pregnancy, it is not a 100% guarantee against pregnancy. Further management would depend on the reports of your investigations.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.
Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
