What Causes Strain In The Knee After A Long Walk?

When I walk for a long period of time - say over 4 or 5 hours - my left knee gets strained above the knee cap. The more I walk after that point, the more strain occurs. After a few days - assuming I discontinue the long period of walking - the knees heals and everything is ok. What is wrong with my knee? Is there anything I can do to cure or delay the strain?
