What Causes Sudden Blurred Vision While On Ritalin?

I had a sudden blurring in both eyes starting upon awakening at 2 AM. I went to the ER. They did a CT scan, a panel of blood tests, a neurologic exam by the PA, followed by a neurologic video consult. They could find no reason for the blurred vision. My vision was 20/100 during my stay in the ER when it is usually 20/30 with my glasses. This marked episode lasted about 3 to 4 hours but my vision still has not returned to normal almost 20 hours later. I saw an optometrist this afternoon and could not explain why I am having the symptoms. I will seeing an Ophthalmologist early this morning. I was put on Ritalin the last 6 weeks for ADD. The after before my episode I drank a large coffee and a few hours before the symptoms I ate about 8 to 10 chocolate candy bars. What are the probable possibilities as to the etiology of my symptoms and how serious are my symptoms?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I can understand your problem and your anxiety. Ritalin (methylphenidate) is a central nervous system stimulant. It affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control.Ritalin is used to treat attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and narcolepsy. Ritalin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. You should not use Ritalin if you have glaucoma, tics or Tourette's syndrome, or severe anxiety, tension, or agitation. Methylphenidate may be habit-forming, and this medicine is a drug of abuse. Tell your doctor if you have had problems with drug or alcohol abuse. Stimulants have caused stroke, heart attack, and sudden death in people with high blood pressure, heart disease, or a heart defect. Ritalin side effects: Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Ritalin: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
•     signs of heart problems - chest pain, trouble breathing, feeling like you might pass out;
•     signs of psychosis - hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real), new behavior problems, aggression, hostility, paranoia;
•     signs of circulation problems - numbness, pain, cold feeling, unexplained wounds, or skin color changes (pale, red, or blue appearance) in your fingers or toes;
•     a seizure (convulsions);
•     muscle twitches (tics);
•     changes in your vision; or
•     penis erection that is painful or lasts 4 hours or longer (rare).

Take the exact opinion of your doctor before starting Ritalin. Take care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
