What Causes Sudden Fainting Spell?

A cousin of mine fainted/passed out while driving his vehicle last week. He stated that he rapidly consumed a bottle of coke, felt a tightening of his stomach, tried to vomit and passed out. He hit two cars and totalled his. He was not injured but what could have caused him to pass out like that?
