Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Sudden Pain And Swelling In Foot And Ankle?
I have a sudden onset of swelling in my left foot and and ankle. It is painful when I apply pressure or walk. Sensitive to the touch also. I have not had any injury or done anything to cause this and it has now persisted over a 4-day period. Some alleviation of swelling when I elevate it or put ice on it but the minute I walk on it...swelling and pain returns. As an FYI I have a history of peripherial artery disease and have a stent in my right upper leg
I have studied your case and I think that you might be having ankle synovitis or effusion. It can be related to your peripheral disease also. So my suggestion is that you should get a Doppler examination of the foo and ankle and also ultrasound. This will confirm our diagnosis if you are having any fluid collection in the ankle or any blockage of the artery. it can be a tendon inflammation also but it has very less chance of this. So this possibility is almost rule out. I would also recommend you to apply a compression bandage and keep your foot elevated. If there is pain then you can also take Brufen for pain.
