What Causes Sudden Pounding Heart Beats?

I am 50 years old and keep getting a pounding heart beat. Like I have had a fright. It wakes me up suddenly. My heart pounds heavily for a minute or two then is followed by shivering, trembling. It eventually subsides. Then a little while later it suddenly all happens again .

HI
WELCOME TO HCM.I UNDERSTAND YOUR CONCERNS
YOUR SYMPTOMS ARE CALLED PALPITATIONS.THEY NEED TO BE INVESTIGATED TO KNOW THE CAUSE.
IN MY PATIENTS I DO DETAILED PHYSICAL EXAMINATION PARTICULARLY BLOOD PRESSURE.THEN I DO ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (EKG)TO SEE RHYTHM OF THE HEART.ALSO I SUGGEST THYROID FUNCTION BOD TEST SINCE INCRESED THYROID HORMONES CAN CAUSE PALPITATIONS.
IN YOU CASE SINCE SYMPTOMS ARE EPISODIC I WILL ALSO ADVISE 24 HR HOLTER MONITORING TO DETECT ANY ABNORMALITIES IN HEART RHYTHM
I HOPE MY OPINION WILL BENIFIT YOU
WISH YOU GOOD HEALTH
