After drinking as little as 1oz of alcohol (any sort) my face becomes hot, and red like a sunburn. It occurs within minutes of the first sip, and remains that way until I awake the next day. I m also blessed with the most vicious hangovers imaginable. Similar to a body flu in symptoms, they can last up to 3 days, and cause lurching until my chest feels internally bruised. An allergy to every type of alcohol seems far fetched; is this an intolerance? Are there tests that could define this for me, and or remedies that could be taken in advance to prevent this outcome?
some people don't break down alcohol all the way and one metabolite (acetaldehyde) builds up. It causes vasodilation like this. Some medications (antabuse, flagyl, metronidazole) inhibit the breakdown of this chemical and produces a temporary problem only while the drug is present. There is a genetic predisposition especially among us Asians that does this permanently (in which case, other family members would have the same results.).
