What Causes Swelling And Cracking Of The Ankle?

i was playing basketball and I came down on someones foot which resulted in my hurting my ankle.. as soon as it happened i heard a loud cracking noise for like 2-3 seconds then it was followed by discomfort in my ankle.. my friends said it was swollen within a minute of this happening.. it kinda is swollen and it hurts only when i apply pressure on the backside of my foot.. i can limp around tippy toing on it with minimal discomfort but when i apply pressure to that back of it it seems like it wants to just pop outta place and send me crashing.. it was very numb after it happened for a little bit too.. and i still dont feel all my toes .. very stiff after sittin for a short hour as well.. Is it broken or maybe just sprained.. I know there is something wrong with it.. but not quite sure what and if it is worth going to the doctor for.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

We should take an X-ray of the ankle joint AP and oblique view to rule out any malunion due to complaints of stiffness. Do consult an orthopedist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Parkavi Gunasekaran, General & Family Physician
