My brother in law (80 yo) is currently taking these meds : LIPITOR, DIOVAN, PROSCAR, ATENOLOL, AMLODIPINE, and FISH OIL . His gum is recently swelling and red, his doctor said may be from the meds he takes. Wondered if any of these meds might cause his gum problems . Any advices ? Thank you very much

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, it is true that these medicines can cause swollen gums.

Especially the blood pressure medicines like Amlodipine is seen to cause gum hyperplasia.

At times, if there is infection or deposits over the teeth then the gums can become inflamed causing pain and redness.

So my suggestion is to consult your Physician and get checked and the medicines can be substituted with other drugs so that symptoms can improve.

Also if possible, generalised scaling can be done for reducing the swelling of the gums.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
