What Causes Swelling And Redness On Toe After An Injury?

I banged my middle toe on my left foot last week. It is tender on the underside of the toe, there is some swelling and red blotches with white areas (only on the underside of the toe, as well as redness on the side). Sometimes it feels like it is throbing. I do try to keep it raised, and when i have a bath, that seems to aggrivate it even more. There is no pain when I try to bend the toes or discomfort....only when i walk is there some discomfort. Any suggestions on what could be wrong and should i be seeking medical attention at this time. I do know that my toe has be hit or stepped on a few times from my younger children, which has added some discomfort. Thanks.
