What Causes Swelling And Tightness In The Lower Legs?

Hello Doctors, My dad who just turned 86 years old was recently discharged from the hospital. He was prescribed 3 medications (Metoprolol, Isosorbide and Generic for Nexium) for 30 days. He has developed swelling and tightness in his feet and legs over the last few days. What could be the cause and how should we treat it? Thanks!

Certain medications for hypertension, cardiac problems can cause swelling of the lower limbs. Does your father have Diabetes. If so, Diabetic Nuropathy is another cause of leg swelling. However, the treatment of this swelling is best done by using grade 2 compression stockings toes to mid thigh, worn in the morning, when the swelling is minimal, worn all through the day, and removed at night before sleeping. Also, when he is seated, it would be good, if he can keep his feet raised on another chair to reused the edema.
