Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
hi I am a 44yr old female, I weigh 250ilbs and am 5 3 in height. Over the past couple of days I have noticed that when I am sitting at my kitchen table for any length of time my feet and ankles begin to swell. I do not have any other pressing medical issues. Have had an elevated blood pressure the last time I was checked last year but Dr. was not overly concerned. I have also had a 5 to 10lb weight gain in the last 2 months. What may be cause of swelling and should I be concerned?
Hi, Thanks for contacting HCM. In cases like yours, most likely the cause is some deficiency in the veins of the lower legs. If the veins are not able to pump the blood back up towards the heart as before, backlog and subsequently, swelling can occur. This tends to be worse with the feet down, as gravity adds even more work for the veins. This is very common in people, and usually the course of action is some type of compression stocking (if the blood bringing the blood down to the legs, arteries, are working properly). I hope this helped answer your question, if you have any others I am here to help. Thank you.
