What Causes Swelling In Eyelids Spreading To Lips?
I don't know if I have an allergic reaction to something. But my upper eye lids will just become to swell and look puffy. It looks like a little sack. Then as it goes on longer it spreads accross my eye and then my entire upper eye lid is puffy lookin. Then sometimes at the same time or by itself my upper or bottom lips get puffy and they feel hard and numb like I was at the dentist. I take benodryl but it doesn't help I feel like so I am not sure if its allergies or something else. I am nursing right now too. Its recently been happening since Feb of 2011 and prior to that was like back in 2008. I could send a photo to help if you would like to see it.
Hello there! Your description is suggestive of a condition called angio-oedema where one sees puffy eyelids with swollen lips that are numb or tingling. It is a kind of an allergic reaction. In most cases it isn't possible to identify a cause. It is sometimes associated with allergy to foods(nuts, eggs, milk, shrimp),drugs (aspirin, drugs for high blood pressure),insect bites etc. Some cases are linked to thyroid disease or other autoimmune disease like SLE. The most important point from the point of view of treatment is whether one feels breathless during an episode of eye/lip puffiness. In case you do you have to rush to the emergency room (ER) because breathlessness means the airways are swelling up. For cases without breathing trouble, a course of antihistamines & steroids helps. Most such episodes should get better within a few days.
