Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Swelling of the feet and ankles do commonly occur after a long flight because of the dependent position of the lower limbs over a period of time and because of muscular inactivity. The normal muscle action which happens during walking does not happen and veins do not return blood as effectively causing fluid to accumulate.

Before you fly again please get a pair of anti DVT stockings for the flight. Use it for the time you are inside and avoid socks, and restrictive clothing which may be tight. Check out exercises for the foot and ankle which should be done periodically. Try to walk for a short while inside.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
