What Causes Swelling In Knuckles?

Hi, I am a sixteen y/o male and I have swelling in three of my knuckles (two on the right hand, one on the left). There is swelling further up one of the fingers but it seems to be concentrated around the knuckle. It is red, not painful but at times itchy/tingly. It has appeared before, possibly two or three times, never causing any pain but it seems to swell and itch for around a week and then go back to normal. I have had it probably twice in the last two months but it is winter, and very cold, i m not sure if that has anything to do with it.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

These knuckles might be what we call ganglion cysts or articular cysts or synovial cysts in the wrist or hand. This is the probable diagnosis in your age group. In older people might be rheumatoid arthritis nodules. I suggest you to see an orthopedic surgeon if it bothers you.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
