What Causes Swelling In Right Leg And Foot For A Type2 Diabetic? How To Fix It?

Hi, I'm a type 2 diabetic with nerapathy. For about two or three months I have been experiencing swelling mainly in my right leg and foot. I keep it lifted at night. Over night the sweeling goes down. Even before eating anything the sewlling begin to occur about an hour and a half after taking my leg down. Is it okay to walk for 30 minutes or more on swollen foot and leg? What's causing my swelling? How can I fix it?

Hello,

Diabetic neuropathy is a complication of long standing diabetes. Here the peripheral nerves are damaged due to persistent hyperglycemia. The swelling is due to venous blood stasis.
In this situation I would advice my patient to increase his physical activities like walking which helps in reducing the pain. Tight control of blood sugar is needed to prevent progression of the condition. Insulin therapy with help reduce the sugar and inflammation of the nerves. Drugs like Gabapentin is prescribed to reduce the pain.
