What Causes Swelling In The Throat?

i have a question regarding my throat. about 3-4 days ago i began to get sick ( fever, cough, sneezing) but after my fever broke my throat has began to swell up. i m guessing it has something to do with my lymph nodes but its not the typical swelling that occurs when your sick. my whole neck is fat and its very noticeable. any idea of what this might be?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The commonest reasons for overall swelling of the neck and throat after an attack of fever, cough and sneezing are one of the following:
- This is due to bacterial or viral infection causing overall edema from the affected parts like pharynx, tonsils and lymph nodes in particular.
- Angioneurotic edema can also cause similar changes, the exact cause of which is not known, allergy to anything can be causing this.

This is a serious problem hence consult your Doctor immediately or go to ER whichever is earlier. This will allow clinical examination, tests of blood and throat swab, and get you started on proper course of an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory medicines , antiallergic and steroids if need be. Get these things done asap.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
