What Causes Swelling In Tongue, Neck Glands And Tonsils?
my daughter (27) is on a second course of antibiotics for tonsilitis. she has swollen neck glands, tonsils (left side mostly) swollen tongue, headache, painful ears, and pain in her armpits (glands) Could this be quinsy and should she go to hospital. she is having great difficulty swallowing.
Difficulty in swallowing, enlarged or pushed in tonsils, gland and all findings that you have mentioned about your 27 year old daughter can be due to bacterial infection. Quinsy is pus collection in between the tonsil and pharyngeal wall and be the reason. This needs to be confirmed by Ultrasound or CT scan and be treated by antibiotic, anti-inflammatory with painkiller properties.
If the pus has formed then it needs to be drained and ENT Surgeon can do this well. Further management as per the findings of the investigations, response to treatment. Such patients usually need admission to the hospital for few days for fluid replacement to avoid dehydration as she can not swallow anything, intravenous antibiotics for early response.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
