What Causes Swelling Under Ear?

I woke up this morning with the left side of my neck, just under my ear, swollen. Like maybe a gland. Right now, its very firm and hard it just reaches part of my cheek, and right by my jaw. It's physically visible, and I wouldn't say it hurts too much, its just painfully noticable whenever I move. The last time I had something similar, it wasnt this bad, and a doctor told me some things like suck on sour candy and gave something else. But that was a long time ago. I'm 18 now, and I was in middle school then.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Swelling below the ear extending to the jaw as well as cheek can occur commonly due to 2 reasons like:
1. If the swelling is also extending in the area in front of the ear it can be due to infection in the parotid gland or due to clogged duct of the parotid gland..

2. It can also be due to inflammation of the gum flap surrounding the wisdom tooth causing Pericoronitis and it can be another cause for swelling in this area..

You need to get the cause confirmed by consulting an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like MRI of the parotid gland or x ray of the wisdom tooth can be diagnostic and treatment can be planned accordingly..

As of now you can take painkillers like Ibuprofen to relieve pain as well as do cool compresses over the swelling for relief..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
