What Causes Swollen And Painful Lymph Node Behind Ears?

Hello, 28 y/o male. 177 lbs, 5 ft 11 3/4 s. Had childhood asthma, have chronic bronchitis. Lymph node behind left ear swollen, hard, and slightly painful. Next day (overnight), on left side of neck two more are swollen and painful (so all 3 are on the left side). One is just under the ear where jaw meets and the other is a few inches above my clavicle. Have had a very slight sore throat for 4 - 5 days. Have seen doc (today), gave me amox presc and TB test (go back thurs). I go in for x-rays tomorrow as well. Would always love to hear some other opinions though.

Hello,

The lymph nodes on either side of the neck, under the jaw, or behind the ears commonly swell when you have a cold or sore throat. Not all swollen lymph nodes are harmful. Gargle with warm salt water 3-4 times a day. Take rest, stay well hydrated. Use humidifier to stay comfortable.

Take warm beverage, chicken broth, semi solid food like oats, porridge, etc. Inhale steam at least twice daily. You can continue to take Amox or Augmentin, they work well in soft tissue bacterial infections(since you had cold recently). Since you have a history of chronic bronchitis, the swollen lymph nodes can be indicative of extra-pulmonary manifestations of tuberculosis.

The lymph node TB is a painful swelling of one or more lymph nodes. Most often, the disease is localized to the anterior or posterior cervical chains or supra clavicular area. No, worries, get the tests done. If the test is negative, you will be treated(with oral or intravenous medications) for the bacterial infection of the throat causing discomfort.

Positive test results may require a longer period of treatment. TB is curable, the medicines are strong so you need to take home made food that is rich in protein, calcium, minerals. Take multivitamin supplements, nuts & dairy products. Adequate sleep is a must. Stay away from stress. Avoid addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
