What Causes Swollen Areas On Head?

my child has several swollen area s on his head. About three to be exact. He says he do not hurt when I rub or push on them, but they are very noticeable. They are not small. The one on the back of his head is the largest. Its probably about 2 to 3 inches in diameter and sticks out about half an inch. Is this an emergency?
