What Causes Swollen Glands In Throat And Phlegm With Blood?

I'm 41yo, great health 140lbs, 5'4, bp:108/78 no illnesses other than uterine fibroids. I picked my 10mo old up fr daycare this past Friday & within an hour my throat was sore and she had the sniffles. I just left my doc today, she said my glands in my throat were elevated and quite swollen. (The baby is fine). Doc said I have no strep, but felt best to put me on z-pack. I just took 2tablets & within 2hours I had 2mucous plugs, tinged w/blood. Is this normal? I felt better with each plug coming out, wanted to be certain it was ok.
