What Causes Swollen, Itchy And Watery Eyes Despite Taking Tobramycin?

I have had watery itchy eyes with matter and without, stick discharge sometimes, for 2 months. I have been to md- prescribed tobramicyn and used for a week, eyes swelled up, lids turned pink. Didn t help. Tried again for another 5 days - no improvement. Saw mds partner, he told me to use the tobramicyn for 3 more days as I was seeing optamologist for eye exam in 3 days. Saw Optomologist, he told me to use Aulways allergy eye drops. Tried those, no improvement, eyes still itchy, watery and now sensitive to light Eyes vision are cloudy sometimes in lower part of eye. Saw PAC at minute clinic as I was going on vacation and wanted to try a different antibiotic She said didn t think it was pink eye and gave me nothing. Its been 2 months, eyes appear slightly bulging, red, itchy, watery, some matter, sticky discharge sometimes. I am a diabetic, long time, eye dr said beginning of affect on eyes, but could go away with better blood sugar control Have had chronically high a1cs of 10.

Ophthalmologist 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome to HCM.
I would like to start of with Tobramycin.
1.I think you might be allergic to Tobramycin drops.I would advice you to stop using it and inform any ophthalmologist/ doctor in your future visits,so they are aware of it and they don't prescribe eyedrops from the same group.

2.Your symptoms have become chronic now,and are suggestive of severe dry eyes. You can start using OTC lubricant eye drops like- Systane/Refresh tears/Thera tears at least 6 times a day and Gel form at night and see whether symptoms improve.

3.You have mentioned light sensitivity, which is a clear sign that your Cornea(front smooth, transparent portion of eye ) is affected due to severe dryness. This needs an immediate direct evaluation.

My advice would be
-Use Sunglasses outdoors
-stop Alaway drops
-Start OTC Lubricant drops
Get an appointment to see a different Ophthalmologist, preferably specialized in Cornea in your area.Do not wait,as the earlier you are seen its better to avoid any permanent damage to your vision.

I will also srongly suggest you to work on bringing your A1C levels down to avoid severe retinal damage which is irreversible.

Hope this answers your query.Take care.
