What Causes Swollen Tongue And Salivary Glands?

Is there a disease going around that makes your tongue, salivary glands and cheeks swell up? I at first thought I had bitten my tongue really bad, but then my mother developed the same symptoms. We live in upstate NY. The condition lasted for three weeks before the tongue swelling finally went down.

The swollen tongue can be secondary to any allergic reaction like angioedema secondary to any food items. The swelling in the cheek can be secondary to tooth infection. The swelling in the salivary gland can be secondary to a stone within the salivary gland or within the duct. Nothing to be panic, consult a oral physician and get a radiograph done to confirm the diagnosis. Mean while you can take a course of antibiotics like amoxicillin and metronidazole (if you are not allergic). Once the diagnosis is confirmed, we can treat accordingly.
