Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi this is a question for my grandfather. He's a park ranger and he was found slumped over in his vehicle. He cannot wake up and the tests they took for heart attacks and strokes came back negative. He's breathing but they have him on medication to make him sleep. He's 74 years old, he's had lung cancer that was removed, a quintuple bypass surgery on his heart, and prostate cancer, but all of these have been treated. He also has diabetes. No one seems to know what the problem is so I was just looking for a second opinion. Thanks!
There are many causes for syncope. Some are as simple as getting dehydrated and others as complicated as a heart rhythm disturbance. Make sure that his diabetes is well controlled. If it is not then he can become dehydrated causing syncope. He may need some testing for heart rhythm disturbances like a Holter or event monitor. Unfortunately sometimes we never find the cause of a single episode of syncope. If it happens recurrently then he will need extensive testing by cardiology and neurology.
