What Causes Tetany Of Face, Neck And Hands Inspite Of Having Calcium Carbonate?

My wife at the age of 58. She is patient of hypocalcemia and taking calcium carbonate supplement daily dose 2-3 gms Ca. Since last 4 years. But it is tetany of face, neck,hands and legs more than a week many times evry day. It recovers after cal. Glucunate IV in just few minutes. She also has pain in stomach The tetany takes for 20-30 minutes every time. Ca level is 8.8 gm/dL. Advice for treatment....

Hello Minas,

I understand your concern for your wife. Your wife's serum calcium is in the low normal range. If for some reason she hyperventilates ( breathes fast), the ionized calcium would drop and she would get a tetany. Next time she gets it try breathing in and out of a paper bag. It might decrease the severity. She should get her vitamin D and PTH ( Parathormone) levels checked as the deficiency of these can lead to tetany. If these are low she would require treatment.
