What Causes The Condition Of Induced Coma While On Treatment For Pneumonia?

hi my mom has had 1 of her lungs removed a few years ago. so now she has only 1 lung. about 2 weeks ago she went into the hospital when she developed pneumonia she has been in and out of the hospital before for this same reason and treated and sent home. She went to olney hospital for the past 3 times and they treat then release. A little over a week ago she went back into the hospital because she was having trouble catching her breath. So we decided to go to a different hospital Holy Cross in Silver Spring. They treated her for pneumonia she was in the hospital for 3 or 4 days and the day she was supposed to be discharged her body was going into shock they attmitted her right back to the ICU her blood and tests results were fine but she got a fever now and she is now in an induced coma. (I believe they did this is that right?) So she has been this way for 2 days I guess. We are waiting for the numbers to show (I am not sure what it is called) But the numbers to show that its safe to start taking the tubes out? Tomorrow the rest of the immediate family will be meeting with someone at the hospital to tell us what to expect when it does happen.

Thanks for your question on HCM. By your history I can assume that your mother is having severe pneumonia for which she is intubated and put her on mechanical ventilator. It is very essential to synchronized with ventilator. So that better oxygenation achieved. Most of the patients are not doing it properly in conscious state so sedation is must. This is the reason for starting sedation in intubated patient, to achive oxygenation and hdnce speedy recovery. So need to woory for this induced coma.
