Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi My Father is showing signs of Dementia. I was wondering how quickly does it take from showing signs and full blown talking strangely, not knowing where he is and who he should know. This has happened to my father over a couple of days is this normal or could something else be wrong with him? He stopped taking his medication without telling his doctor (I don,t know how long ago).
I am sorry to hear about your father and his recent change in behavior. When working with people with changes in behavior there are numerous things to consider as to what may cause the change. The first thing as a doctor I consider his medication and if there were any recent changes to his medication. Since he recently stopped taking them this could be the cause.
Other options could also include infection or new onset of a new disease.
If he is truly starting to exhibit signs of dementia then it could be a slow process taking years to gradually deteriorate or quickly depending on the type of dementia.
I notice you are concerned about his change and I would recommend he see his doctor to do a full examination and review his medications.
Hope this helps answer your query. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact us again.
