What Causes Throat Pain While Swallowing?

It hurts to swallow on the left side of my throat. Last week it hurt on the right side but both sides cleared up last weekend. There are no white spots on my tonsils, as far as I can see. They seem to hurt for a while and then clear up and then hurt again. I initially thought this could have been caused by wearing earplugs to sleep but I m not sure...can you help?
