What Causes Thumb Pain?

It hurts to extend my thumb or really any movement at all. Anything that requires significant strength from my thumb I cannot do because it hurts. I didn t hit it or jam it on anything, I just woke up one day and noticed that there was pain. I thought it d go away but it s been a few weeks now. I type for most of the day at work, could this have caused it? I am not one to run to the doctor for every little thing but I m afraid something is actually going on in there...

Hello,
pain in thumb can occur due to variety of conditions like De'Quervain's tendonitis, basal joint arthritis, Trigger thumb etc. Many times it is due to overuse. So, consult an orthopaedician for diagnosis and further treatment accordingly. Proper history and some provocative manoeuvers along with x ray and CT scan of involved area are helpful in diagnosis. You should give rest to your thumb, activity modification is necessary to get relief from pain. You can take tab. ibuprofen 200mg tds for 5 days and tab. pan 40 once every morning 1/2 hour before meal.
take care bye.
