What Causes Tightness In The Chest?

Ive had a tight chest for about a week now. It feels as if its hard to get a deep breath at times. What could this be? Chest xray came back normal. Dr ordered blood tests, thyroid etc. I was told by a dr at Urgent Care that he thought it was anxiety. I don't feel its anxiety as this has been going on for a week now and it happens even when Im not stressed about anything. The first day it started my chest was really tight, I felt dizzy, sweaty and had the chills. Everyday after that is just tight chest, hard time getting a good breath and occasionally feeling weird...perhaps dizzy or light headed. What could this be? Im 27 and take good care of myself. Im not overweight and I run 3 times a week.

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that your symptoms do not seem to be related to any cardiac disorders.

Anxiety or musculo-skeletal pain could also explain your symptoms.

Nevertheless, I would recommend performing some other tests to exclude other possible causes:

- respiratory function tests to exclude a lung disorder
- PCR, ESR for inflammation
- thyroid hormone levels for thyroid dysfunction
- a resting ECG.

In the meantime, I would recommend trying alprazolam. If it helps, it would indicate possible anxiety underlying your symptoms.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
